Why Should Christians Care?
“The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He was that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene.” Isaiah 59:15b-16a
Scripture reveals that God loves justice and is deeply gieved when the lives of the poor are destroyed through the neglect or the greed of those more powerful. As Christians, we need to consider human trafficking’s impact on the victim and society:
- Slavery preys on the weak and vulnerable.
- The majority of victims are poor; 80% are female; 50% are children.
- Slavery destroys the lives of victims, putting them at extreme risk for violence and disease, including HIV/AIDS.
- Slavery reinforces the cycle of illitercacy and poverty. It fuels criminal activity and often leads to corruption in local governments.
- Slavery impacts us directly. Products we purchase in our stores may conain raw materials harvested by slaves, including those made from rubber, cocoa, and palm oil.
“Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the LORD. I will protect them from those who malign them.” Psalm 12:5
How do people become enslaved?
Human Trafficking involves the use of threat, violence, and deception. Often traffickers lure victims with promises of good jobs or education. Some victims are kidnapped or purchased from family members. Millions are forced into slavery in order to pay off small loans. Victims are then exploited for sex or labor or both.
Sex Trafficking refers to forced prostitution and related activities. Victims are often transported across international borders.
Labor Trafficking refers to any form of forced labor. Victims, including children, work 10-18 hours a day under abusive conditions.
Proverbs 31:8 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”
