Apex Kids Summer Catechism: Redemption
Many of us aren’t familiar with this idea of catechism (I admit, I’ve only learned of it since becoming a parent). Mentioning it to some people, I sometimes hear, “Isn’t that a Catholic thing?” The word catechsim comes from the Greek “katecheo” which means oral teaching. Catechism is a way to teach the basic doctrines and principles of faith to children in question and answer form, and yes, Protestants have been doing it for hundreds of years.
For our summer break, we’ve come up with a very basic catechism that will help kids learn the gospel through the four major parts of God’s big story: Creation, Fall, Redemption and New Creation. This is not an exhaustive catechism. It’s more to help families get their feet wet with this practice. The idea is to learn one question and answer per day and review the previous day’s questions and answers as you go. There will be five questions per week for the next four weeks, so by the end of it your child can possibly know the answers to twenty questions.
This week, the questions will be based on Redemption:
1. What did God do to save the fallen world?
God sent His son, Jesus to save the fallen world.
John 3:16, Luke 19:10
2. What did Jesus do to save the world?
Lived a perfect life obedient to God and died a death sinners deserved.
Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 3:18
3. What happened on the third day after Jesus died on the cross?
Jesus won victory over death and rose alive from the grave.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 54-55
4. What has Jesus done for those who trust Him?
He has taken their punishment and washed away their sin so we could be friends with God.
Romans 8:1, 1 Corinthians 6:11, Colossians 1:21-22
5. Can we earn friendship with God by “being good?”
No. We are saved by grace through faith.
Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 2:16
