Alpha Study—Exploring God

****The last few months our youth at the Pavilion have been going through an Alpha study–where they explore God and questions about life. It’s been an interesting few months as most of the youth who come have been in or around church for years, have gone to Soul Survivor and attend church youth events on a regular basis. To have young people who have experienced all that and still don’t know what they think or believe about God has been telling and has caused us leaders to re-evaluate all that we are doing.

This past Sunday evening I was leading the Alpha discussion and the whole night was on “How does God guide us…” At the beginning of the chat, I listed the below words and asked all the students to pick the top three words that best describe the people or things that they look to for guidance or direction in life. The most popular answers were family, friends, music and the internet. Two students answers that they don’t think anything guides or directs them–and one person said God would be in their top three.

I went on to share what has guided me through the years and how God ended up being in my top three. My challenge at the end of the evening was two-fold: Firstly, I wanted them to believe, and maybe even be bothered, that all of them are guided and influenced by something. We talked about influence and about how our lives somehow usually start to model or take the form of that which influences or guides us. Secondly, I encouraged them to be bold enough to think about the question: What would they have to experience/learn/see about God for Him to be one of the top guides or influencers in their life? Two of them answered my last question and then the discussion was done.

I left that night thinking that I had no clue of what magic program, words, or lessons would help our young people experience God for themselves. I did leave convinced though of one thing: Our young people have to have their own transformational, radically perspective altering experience of God.
