Children, Discipleship Discipling Idea From Britain’s Got Talent

Tonight for our family time at dinner, we watched this great clip of a shy teenager and his friend shocking Simon Cowell, along with the whole audience, with their audition on Britain’s Got Talent.

Afterwards we had a great conversation around what we each thought Jesus is saying to each person involved, as well as to us.

Before you read any further, what is He saying to you?

Our boys talked about:

  • What we say to people matters, even at Elementary age.  They might not show a response, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hurt others.  Unkind words and bullying are not what Jesus would do!
  • We shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.  It is easy to do, for instance with someone who is overweight or very shy.  They reckoned that while sometimes our snap judgment may be right, we need to leave room to be proven wrong.
  • Jesus would be really pleased with the girl (Charlotte), especially her faithfulness as a friend, both before and even after their audition.  We prayed that we would each be able to spot the potential in others and ‘call it out’ in them.
  • Jesus would also be pleased with the way Jonathan stuck with her, even when Simon tempted him to drop her!  We thought it seemed like a big character test moment, which he passed!

If you’ve not seen this film, I hope you are inspired by it!  I also wanted to give you a quick snapshot into how we are trying to disciple our sons through everyday pop culture.  Hannah and I just tried to ask questions and prompt thoughtful reflection, and we then moved on to a great time praying together.  Clearly this is something that could easily be used in a Missional Community, especially one with children in it.  And then you could all do your own opera auditions!!

  1. Brilliant Alex (and Hannah). It’s so important that we engage with our kids culture – my lovely hubby wasn’t allowed to watch all sorts of things (Grange Hill and Rentaghost) spring to mind ( #showingmyage). The questions and examples you give show how easy it is to sound time as a family

Reply to this comment * Phone crashed as i was posting comment!!! That should say “spend time as a family” and hang out with Jesus as well. And it gives our kids safe processing time so when they’re talking about tv at school they’re able to witness way more naturally…. #discipleshiptv !!!! (Also – if you just ban telly it excludes our kids from their peers….)

  1. I agree Nicole. And Grange Hill was one of my favourites! Pop Culture is such a common ‘language’ for our society that we need to teach our kids how to both enjoy and critique it. That seems to be foundational to teaching them how to exegete any culture they find themselves in, so they can bless the good and challenge the bad.

Anyway, hope you & Steve & your family have a wonderful Easter!

Reply to this comment * Thanks mate. You too!

Note to self….must find out what exegete means then use it at least 3 times in intelligent conversation…. ![:-)](http://web.archive.org/web/20121122002929im_/http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif?m=1129645325g)

Oh I don’t know what it means either – I just sprinkle around words like that to add flavour to my sentences ![;)](http://web.archive.org/web/20121122002929im_/http://s1.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif?m=1129645325g)
